Foundation engineering

Foundation design coordination and construction for commercial and industrial structures across Nigeria.

What is foundation engineering?

Foundation engineering covers the assessment, coordination and construction of the substructure that transfers a building's loads safely into the ground. It sits between geotechnical investigation, structural design and on-site construction.

Engineering application

Foundation engineering determines whether a shallow or deep foundation system is appropriate, coordinates pile or footing layout with structural design, and manages construction through to substructure completion.

Typical project types

  • Commercial and industrial developments
  • Multi-storey residential buildings
  • Projects on variable, soft, or reclaimed ground

Advantages of engaging early

  • Foundation system selection informed by ground investigation and structural loads
  • Coordination between structural, geotechnical and construction teams
  • Reduced risk of foundation-related delays or redesign

Considerations

  • Requires reliable geotechnical investigation data
  • Foundation choice affects programme, cost and constructability
  • Groundwater and ground contamination can influence method selection

Process

  1. Review of geotechnical investigation and structural loading data
  2. Foundation system options review (shallow vs deep, pile type)
  3. Coordination with structural engineer and main contractor
  4. Foundation construction — piling, pile caps, ground beams or footings
  5. Verification testing and handover of substructure

Foundation engineering FAQ

What is the difference between a shallow and deep foundation? +
A shallow foundation transfers load directly to near-surface soil, typically via footings or a raft. A deep foundation, such as piling, transfers load to deeper, more competent strata or through shaft friction where surface soils are too weak.
When is piling required instead of a shallow foundation? +
Piling is typically required where surface soils cannot safely carry the structural load, where settlement must be controlled, or where ground conditions such as soft or reclaimed soils are present.
Do you carry out ground investigation? +
