Pile testing
Pile integrity and load testing to verify capacity and installation quality across Nigeria.
What is pile testing?
Pile testing verifies the structural integrity and/or load capacity of an installed pile. The two principal categories are pile integrity testing (checking for defects in the pile shaft) and pile load testing (verifying the pile can safely carry design load).
Pile integrity testing
Typically carried out using low-strain methods, pile integrity testing checks for defects such as necking, voids or discontinuities in the pile shaft, without loading the pile to capacity.
Pile load testing
Static or dynamic load testing verifies that a pile can safely carry its design load with acceptable settlement, and may be used to validate design assumptions for a wider pile group.
Typical project types
- Projects requiring contractual or design verification of pile capacity
- Sites with variable ground conditions
- Large piling contracts using proof or preliminary test piles
Advantages
- Confirms pile quality and capacity before structural loading
- Supports design verification and risk reduction
- Provides documented evidence for project quality records
Considerations
- Test method should be agreed with the structural/geotechnical designer
- Load testing requires reaction systems (kentledge or tension piles) for static tests
- Testing should be programmed to avoid delaying construction
Methodology
- Test pile(s) selected or installed per specification
- Test method set up — sonic/low-strain equipment, or static/dynamic load-test rig
- Test carried out and data recorded
- Results analysed against acceptance criteria
- Test report issued
