PILING & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

CFA piling

Continuous flight auger piling for fast, low-vibration foundation installation on commercial, industrial and infrastructure sites in Lagos and Nigeria.

What is CFA piling?

CFA (continuous flight auger) piling installs a cast-in-situ concrete pile by drilling a continuous hollow-stem auger to design depth in a single pass, then pumping concrete or grout through the stem as the auger is withdrawn. Reinforcement is placed into the wet concrete immediately after casting. No temporary casing or drilling fluid is required in typical conditions.

Engineering application

CFA piling transfers structural loads from a building or structure through weaker surface soils to a more competent bearing stratum, or develops capacity through skin friction along the pile shaft. It is applied where ground conditions, programme and site constraints favour a continuous, low-vibration installation method.

Typical project types

  • Commercial and office developments
  • Industrial and warehouse facilities
  • Residential developments in constrained urban plots
  • Infill sites adjacent to existing structures

Advantages

  • Low vibration and noise relative to driven piling — suited to urban and infill sites
  • No temporary casing or drilling fluid required in typical ground conditions
  • Continuous installation process supports consistent production rates
  • Suitable for a range of pile diameters and depths, subject to rig capacity and ground conditions

Considerations

  • Ground conditions with significant obstructions, boulders or very dense strata may limit feasibility
  • Concrete/grout mix design and pumping control are critical to pile integrity
  • Verticality and installation records should be monitored throughout installation
  • Site access and headroom must suit the piling rig

Construction methodology

  1. Setting out — pile positions are set out to the foundation layout.
  2. Auger drilling — the continuous flight auger drills to design depth in a single continuous pass.
  3. Concreting — concrete or grout is pumped through the hollow stem under controlled pressure as the auger is withdrawn.
  4. Reinforcement placement — the reinforcement cage is placed into the wet concrete immediately after casting.
  5. Pile head preparation — pile heads are trimmed and prepared to founding level ahead of pile cap construction.

Equipment

CFA piling is installed using a purpose-built CFA piling rig with a hollow-stem continuous flight auger and a concrete/grout pumping system. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED RIG MODEL, CAPACITY AND SPECIFICATION.] See equipment & capabilities.

Quality-control considerations

Installation parameters — including auger rotation, penetration rate, concrete/grout volume and pressure — are monitored during installation. Pile integrity testing may be carried out following installation. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED QA/QC PROCEDURE.]

Safety considerations

Piling operations are carried out in line with site-specific health and safety procedures, including rig exclusion zones, lifting operations and underground/overhead service checks. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED HSE PROCEDURE.]

CFA piling FAQ

What is CFA piling? +
CFA piling is a piling method where a continuous flight auger drills to depth in one pass, and concrete or grout is pumped through the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn, before reinforcement is placed.
When is CFA piling appropriate? +
CFA piling suits sites needing low-vibration, low-noise installation — such as urban and infill sites — and ground conditions without significant obstructions or very dense strata.
What are the advantages of CFA piling? +
Advantages include reduced vibration and noise, no temporary casing or drilling fluid in typical ground, and a continuous installation process that supports consistent production rates.
What is the difference between CFA and bored piling? +
CFA piling drills and concretes in a continuous single-pass operation without temporary casing, while conventional bored piling may use casing or drilling fluid and can typically reach larger diameters and greater depths in more variable ground. See bored piling.
How deep can CFA piles be installed? +
Achievable depth depends on rig specification and ground conditions. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED DEPTH/DIAMETER RANGE.]
How are CFA piles tested? +
CFA piles may be verified using pile integrity testing and, where required, static or dynamic load testing. See pile testing.
Is CFA piling suitable for urban construction? +
Yes — its low-vibration, low-noise installation profile is a common reason CFA piling is selected for urban and infill sites, subject to ground conditions and access.
How can I request a piling assessment? +
Contact us with your project location, structure type and any available ground investigation data, and we will advise on suitability and next steps.
