PILING & FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

Bored piling

Large-diameter rotary bored piles for high-load structures and variable ground conditions across Nigeria.

What is bored piling?

Bored piling installs a cast-in-situ concrete pile by rotary drilling a shaft to design depth — using temporary casing, drilling fluid, or both where ground conditions require support — before placing reinforcement and concrete. It is capable of larger diameters and greater depths than CFA piling in more variable or obstructed ground.

Engineering application

Bored piling is used where high individual pile capacity is required, where ground conditions include obstructions, or where large-diameter piles are needed for heavily loaded structures.

Typical project types

  • High-rise commercial and residential towers
  • Heavy industrial structures
  • Bridge and infrastructure foundations
  • Sites with variable or obstructed ground

Advantages

  • Larger diameters and greater depths achievable than CFA piling
  • Suited to variable, obstructed or mixed ground conditions
  • Shaft can be visually inspected prior to concreting where open-bored

Considerations

  • Slower production rate than CFA piling
  • Casing/drilling-fluid management required in unstable ground
  • Spoil handling and disposal must be planned

Construction methodology

  1. Setting out pile positions
  2. Rotary drilling to design depth, with temporary casing or drilling fluid as required
  3. Base cleaning and inspection
  4. Reinforcement cage installation
  5. Concreting, typically by tremie method
  6. Casing extraction (where used)

Equipment

Installed using a rotary bored piling rig with associated casing oscillator/rotator and, where required, drilling fluid (bentonite/polymer) systems. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED RIG SPECIFICATION.] See equipment & capabilities.

Quality-control considerations

Verticality, founding level, base cleanliness and concrete placement are monitored and recorded. Pile integrity testing may follow installation. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED QA/QC PROCEDURE.]

Safety considerations

Operations follow site-specific HSE procedures covering excavation, lifting and confined-space controls where applicable. [REPLACE WITH VERIFIED HSE PROCEDURE.]

Bored piling FAQ

What is bored piling? +
Bored piling installs a cast-in-situ pile by rotary drilling a shaft, using casing or drilling fluid where required, before placing reinforcement and concrete.
When is bored piling used instead of CFA piling? +
Bored piling is typically selected when larger diameters, greater depths, or ground obstructions rule out CFA piling. See CFA piling.
What diameters and depths are achievable? +
[REPLACE WITH VERIFIED DIAMETER/DEPTH RANGE.]
How is pile quality verified? +
Through installation records and, where specified, pile integrity or load testing. See pile testing.
